Jessica Harper - Photo # 2 - Busboys and Poets Open Mic Event, "Nine on the Ninth" - March 9, 2010

Washington D.C. restaurant Busboys and Poets honors Women's History Month Tuesday by featuring Hyattsville cellist Monica McIntyre during its "Nine of the Ninth" open mic night. She is accompanied by her sister Marcia, a violinist also from Hyattsville. McIntyre's debut album, "Blusolaz," released in October 2003, blends jazz, blues, soul, reggae and middle-eastern music to create a unique sound. (U of M Photo/Jess Harper)

McIntyre shares the inspiration behind her music with the audience. She explains that her sole focus is to incorporate messages of female empowerment into her songs. The cellist hopes young women feel emboldened after listening to her music. (U of M Photo/Jess Harper)

McIntyre tunes her cello before open mic begins. A graduate of Drexel University, she has been playing the cello since age 7. McIntyre studied classical cello for 11 years. (U of M Photo/Jess Harper)

"Sister Talk" - Sisters and musicians Monica and Marcia McIntyre share a laugh before their set. Monica acknowledges her sister Marcia, not only as a great violinist, but as a musicial inspiration as well. (U of M Photo/Jess Harper)

Poets and patrons line the stage behind Marcia. The McIntyre sisters perform three songs before a sold-out crowd. They engage the audience with hand-claps and sing alongs. (U of M Photo/Jess Harper)
