Tina Irgang: Photo #2: Haiti Panel Discussion, March 9, 2010

Latecomers found only floor space as a panel discussion on Haiti's devastating earthquake drew a crowd of around 80 students to Stamp Student Union March 9. The university is sending a small delegation to the island nation next week to help build shelters for survivors. (UMD Photo/Tina Irgang).

Panelist Solomon Comissiong criticized the media for neglecting to research and explain Haiti's history in its coverage of the Jan. 12 earthquake. Comissiong is the public relations director of the university's Nyumburu Cultural Center. (UMD Photo/Tina Irgang).

Physician and Maryland alumnus Kevin Streete gave an emotional account of his recent trip to Haiti, saying he had seen several hundred patients each day. He is flanked by fellow panelists Berlin Dean (l), a local small business owner also recently returned from Haiti and Desta Anyiwo, (r) co-chairman of the African Students Progressive Action Committee.
